Volunteer

The staff canteen

Volunteering for Strawberry Fair is a great way to gain experience in events management and meet a fantastic, diverse group of people that you probably wouldn't get a chance to work with usually. Everyone who works for Strawberry Fair (except the security team, which we think is fair enough given the job they do!) does so for free. This not only means that everyone who is involved actually wants to be - it means that a free day out can be offered to the people of Cambridge. Read on to find out more about the different roles involved.

To volunteer your time please Fill in this form or email us at

Site crew – if you don't mind getting your hands dirty and shifting all kinds of infrastructure (staging, fencing, tables, chairs, etc) then the site crew is the place for you. They are very professional, do heroic work when challenging conditions present themselves, and always with a smile on their face. The Strawberry Fair site crew is renowned across Britain as one of the most efficient and ‘on the ball’ teams in large events. Most of the team go on to work at many other fairs, festivals and events nationwide. If you want to gain experience working on a large event there isn’t a better place to look. Strawberry Fair’s site goes from an empty 30 acre field to a tented village and market in the space of a week, other events this size have a month to set up.

Stewarding – a really important job on the day of the Fair itself. Our stewards are often described as the eyes and ears of the Fair because this is actually what they are. A steward's main role is to highlight issues that arise on site before they escalate, provide visitors to the Fair with information, and help out in an emergency. Not a role to be underestimated. Working in pairs, stewards patrol the site to keep an eye on the crowds in order to ensure the safety and well being of all visitors. If they see something that shouldn't be happening they will let HQ know who will arrange for the issue to be dealt with appropriately. Stewards are encouraged to deal only with situations they feel comfortable with and never put themselves in danger. If you see someone in a Strawberry Fair high-vis jacket say hello - they're probably a steward and happy to help you.

Environment team – perhaps not everyone's first choice of job but litter picking and dealing with the refuse generated by the Fair is extremely important. We have a dedicated and hard working Environment team who could use all the volunteer help they can get. Strawberry Fair strives to be environmentally friendly and these guys deliver. We try and recycle as much rubbish created by an event as we possibly can, we hit somewhere in the region of 40% at the moment. We need people to help us collect and sort rubbish, even if it is for only a couple of hours and you don’t have the time to commit further to the Fair but you want to give something back then this is a great way of doing so. We are extremely grateful to those that help every year and the job becomes a smaller task with more helpers. You don’t have to apply just turn up on the day or in the days following the fair and ask for a bin bag and one of those cool grabber things.

Production – there's a mountain of paperwork that needs to be done before the Fair can happen. It's very likely that visitors to the Fair will never see the hard working admin volunteers that spend time making sure that both the I's are dotted and T's are crossed. Stall holders need liaising with, a website needs maintaining, the press needs to be given stories, merchandise needs organising, and that's all just the tip of the iceberg. The organisation starts from September the year before the fair and continues right up to the month after the fair - sometimes it feels like a full time job. We have an excellent team but are always looking for more lovely organised people – so please give us a shout.
