It's your Fair, Play Fair
'It's your Fair, Play Fair' is aimed at all visitors to Strawberry Fair 2008 in order to promote a sense of pride for an event that really belongs to the people of Cambridge. Whilst many of the Fair's visitors come and go without causing a problem it is recognised that a minority do cause difficulties and this needs addressing. The campaign is looking to bring about change in the following ways:
- No camping
- No peeing, other than in toilets
- Challenge 21, to prevent under-age drink sales
- Responsible drinking
- No drugs, glass or fire on site
- Being considerate to other Fair goers and locals
- Have fun, smile, and participate
- Leave no trace, take your litter home
What we're doing
A range of activities are being undertaken to achieve our aim of being a good neighbour to local residents and an event where everyone can enjoy themselves safely.
- Our security and stewarding teams work hard to ensure that under-age drinking is stopped. The organising committee works closely with local shops and supermarkets to ensure that under-age alcohol sales are prevented.
- We are looking into the installation of mobile urinals, in addition to the toilet facilities already provided, and will make arrangements for areas affected by mess to be properly cleaned.
- Increasing the use of bins with lids to ensure litter stays where it's supposed to. We're ordering an extra 50 bins bringing the total to around 350, and we're looking to produce more signage so people know where the bins are. Efforts to recycle even more are also being made.
- Reviewing our music programme and the siting of music stages to reduce noise as much as possible. An external sound engineer will monitor noise levels at site boundaries and we will be publicising a number on which local residents can contact us if the noise becomes too intrusive.
You can make a difference
The campaign won't succeed without the help of people like you (reading this!). Strawberry Fair organisers are very much in favour of bring about change in order to benefit everyone and have been working with the council and organisations such as the police to do this.
So what can you do? Here's what we think...
- If you choose to camp please do so away from Midsummer Common. There are areas within travelling distance that you can pitch up.
- There are toilets available so please use them. Nobody likes finding a mess in their garden or watching someone relieve themselves in a bush.
- If you are not old enough to drink yet please don't at Strawberry Fair. We are working with local shops to prevent under-age alcohol sales and our onsite bars are instructed to check ID.
- If you are old enough to drink please do so responsibly. There will be some great entertainment at the Fair this year that you won't be able to enjoy under the influence of alcohol and certainly won't remember.
- Drugs shouldn't be brought to or used at Strawberry fair anymore than they should anywhere else. If you are caught using or dealing drugs expect to speak to the police at some point.
- Leave glass bottles at home; if they break they are dangerous not only lying on the ground but also to clear up.
- Please don't bring barbeques to Strawberry Fair. The site can get very busy which increases the chances of the barbeque being knocked over and potentially causing a fire.
- Strawberry Fair takes place for your enjoyment. We want you to have a great time when you visit us whether that's by enjoying music by local artists, young musicians, or participating in something yourself. There are some exciting activities planned this year that everyone will be able to enjoy.
- After your day at the Fair please take your litter with you. Our Environment team do a magnificent job every year cleaning up after thousands of people but the job doesn't get any easier. If everyone took away what they brought along the work would be halved.
